"The Chrysanthemum and the Sword: Patterns of Japanese Culture" is a 1946 study of Japanese culture by Ruth Benedict. The book was commissioned by the U.S. Office of War Information. One of the key insights of the book is the difference between a culture based on guilt, such as the West, and a culture based on shame, such as Japan's.
